Welcome to Captain Albert Stevens School
Our school has grades k-5 and approximately 300 students. The staff consists of classroom teachers, educational technicians, specialists in the areas of literacy, special education, music, art, physical education, speech & language, and guidance. We provide services to reach the needs of all students. We are always available to discuss program options and curriculum delivery. Our curriculums are aligned to the Common Core that has been adopted by the State of Maine.
School Hours: School starts at 8:45 am and students are welcomed at 8:30 am to enjoy breakfast or participate in the mileage club (Tuesday & Wednesdays) Students who arrive after 8:45 am are considered late. We would hope that all students could arrive on time everyday as this establishes good habits in the future. School dismissal is at 3:05 pm. Private riders & walkers are dismissed first, followed by bus students. Please let us know if your child's dismissal routine will be different by 2:45 pm so that we have plenty of time to prepare students for these changes. In order to insure your child's safety, it is important for us to know if another person is to pick up your child. You can call us or send in a note. Bus drivers require written parental permission to change "drop off" sites of students or to allow them
to ride a different bus than usual. Safety requires all of us working together with good communication and accurate details.
Absences: When your child is absent from school, please send a written note of excuse to his/her teacher. We would like to be called when your child is absent so that we know he/she is safe. (338-3510)
Breakfast/Lunches: There is not a charging option. Parents may go online and pay for meals. It will be necessary for you to call us and get a student ID number and directions on how to do this. Many of our parents love this option. We also accept cash. Please send the total $$ for the week's lunches and/or breakfasts on the first day of the week in an envelope with the days you would like to order lunch/breakfast. Our menus go out at the end of every month so that you are aware of our meal offerings. If a student forgets his/her lunch we will provide them with a hot meal. No child would ever go without a meal.
Recess: We do try to go outside each day so that students have the opportunity to get some fresh air. If it is sprinkling or misty, there is a good chance we will get a few minutes of recess. If it is pouring down rain we will not go outside. If the temperature is very cold and/or there is a strong wind we use a weather chart to help determine the safety of going or not going outside. We do have the charts available in the office if you would like one.
Physical Education Class: Classes do go outside weather permitting. We ask that all students come prepared to participate in p.e. class as outlined by the teacher. You should have a pamphlet from the teacher on the second day of school.
Art Class: Students are encouraged to bring an old shirt to school to wear over their clothes when they are doing "messy" art projects.
Medical: If your child needs medication, it will be necessary for you to send in the school medical authorization sheet with your physician's signature. We are not allowed to dispense ANY TYPE of over the counter or prescribed medication at school. Please contact the school nurse if you need more information about the medical policy.
Parent/teacher Group (PTG): This group meets once a month. Parent involvement is needed and participation in this group is very much appreciated. We have a great group and have fun organizing enrichment activities, fundraising and meeting other parents.
